My PDP-11/93

Thanks to Doc Shipley for trading parts and providing advice, and Johnny Bilquist for advice and guidance in configuring the BA23 system chassis.

Remaining components needed (mostly cosmetic):
  1. FOUND Front and rear pedestal BA23 covers (or bezels). 
  2. FOUND Knock-out plates to cover holes for rear of BA23.
  3. Copy of V2.0 of the KDJ11-EB monitor EPROM (to support dates after 2009).
  4. FOUND - RQZX1 documentation - To reach the RQZX1 configuration menu boot DU253 - see attachment at bottom of this page.

  This QBUS SCSI card (CQD223A/TM) swapped for a DEC RQZX1 SCSI controller.

 
  A post to alt.sys.pdp11 suggested that this 2MB board can be upgraded to 4MB.

This is a 4MB (2KW) board, KDJ11-EB

PDP-11/93 boot-up (24 April 2010)

Ad-hoc notes and diary about configuring and starting my 11/93 for the first time
  1. Pulled the frame out of the pedestal unit so I can remove the cover panels for the powerup.
  2. To check the power-supply I needed a load, and so the TK70 tape drive seemed the best candidate. Mounted onto a sled and attached to the power-supply. I powered up the chassis and noted the forward fan worked but the power-supply fan was not spinning.  The front-panel indicated DCOK and the TK70 lit up one light. Powered down. Closer inspection revealed that the wire-screen had one wire bent inwards which fouled the blades. It snapped trying to bend it back so I removed it.
  3. Inspecting the SLU panel switch settings:
    1(off) - Enable SLU
    2(on), 3(on), 4(off) - select Boot device 1
    5(on) - forced dialog
    6(on),7(off),8(on) - 9600 baud, 8-data bits, no parity, one stop-bit console
  4. KDJ11-E switch settings:
    6(on), 7(on)

    Guide suggests these should all be set to off. Setting them all OFF now.
  5. Powered up again after fixing fan shield, both fans now working, everything looks ok. Powered down.
  6. Installed the KDJ11-EB into Slot 1 of the H9278-A backplane, connected the rear SLU panel to the CPU board and closed up the rear panel.


QBUS backplane configuration

A surprise I found with this system was the number of microprocessors employed in the implementation of various controllers.

Here is a list of uP found in this system:

  1. Zilog Z80 which controls the serial-lines on the KDJ11-EB CPU board.
  2. Intel 80186 16-bit CPU found on the MSCP SCSI interface (RQZX1).
  3. Motorola 68000 CPU on the TQK70 tape controller.
  4. Motorola 68000 CPU on the DELQNA Ethernet interface.

Comprehensive listing of relative performance of PDP-11, VAX and Alpha machines from Pete Sivia. PDP-11/93 has a VUP "VAX 11/780 Unit of Power" of 1.0

    The following is a VUP and SPECfp92 table that I put together a while
    back using a number of different public sources.  As a bonus you get
    some PDP-11 ratings courtesy of a chart that showed up a few years ago
    in a DECdirect catalog :-)
    
    DSNlink also has an article called "CPU types and their related VUP
    Ratings" dated 15-Jul-94 for those who have access.
    
    (Note: the SPECfp92 ratings for Alphas have undergone change since the
    models were first introduced as various pieces of the operating system
    and microcode were "tweaked".  The numbers appear fairly stable.)
